McArthur Squash Center at Boar’s Head Sports Club is the home of the Virginia men’s and women’s squash teams. After an extensive planning and review phase in 2011, the University formally announced a gift agreement with the Quantitative Foundation to fund the construction of a state-of-the-art squash facility for the UVa men’s and women’s teams. The 33,000-square-foot facility now provides a gateway for the sport’s development at the University and in the Southeast. The facility features 8 singles courts, 2 doubles courts, a four-wall-glass feature court, and capacity for 1,000 spectators. Fully clad in Fabral® metal from roofing to the wall panels, the McArthur Squash Center stands apart from the typical brick and slate architecture on campus. With an industrial metal tennis pavilion adjacent to the building, the architects of Bartzen and Ball in Richmond, VA chose metal to complement the existing facility while creating a more esthetically pleasing structure. The project features a total of 585 squares of Thin Seam® and HCF® panels in Bright Silver and Medium Bronze. The project was set in a different direction until Tom McGraw with WA Lynch Roofing Co pushed for the specs to feature Fabral metal. McGraw had developed a good working relationship with Fabral and convinced the young and progressive architecture firm, Bartzen and Ball, to choose them. Despite challenges caused by the size of the project and strict time constraints, the university was extremely pleased. “They fell in love with the building… it was an incredible end result” added McGraw.
